RFID technology is a type of tag that can be implanted into various good and scanned. It is increasingly being used in retail purposes and there are concerns from some consumers over the level of privacy that this type of surveillance is affecting. Originally goods were being monitored between the manufactures and the retail outlet on a whole batch basis, but now this is increasingly being carried out on individual items.

There are some benefits to retailers of course. This technology could help to save time by replacing the barcode. This means that when a trolley of shopping is bought to the checkout it will not be necessary to scan each item, rather the whole trolley will be able to be scanned in one go. However, with the technology improving all the tags are getting smaller and the scanners that detect them more sophisticated. Customers may have tags in clothing for instance and not know it.

Electronic tagging is often used in criminal matters to monitor the whereabouts of an offender. This is used to a greater extent in countries such as the USA and Belgium. Due to overcrowding in prisons it is debated whether the technology could be used to a greater extent here to monitor criminals and keep the numbers in prisons down.
